Easy Sugar-Free Keto Peppermint Patties Recipe

This is a recipe for homemade Keto peppermint patties which are really easy to make, and taste so good you’ll never know they are sugar-free. If you like peppermint patties you will love these!

Sugar Free Keto Peppermint Patties

If you are like me and love york peppermint patties then you will love these. The taste is the same, that dark chocolate on the outside and the cool peppermint flavor on the inside.

These homemade sugar-free peppermint patties are a perfect balance of dark chocolate and a soothing cool peppermint filling, all accomplished with no sugar and low carb ingredients.

They are so easy to make and once you make a batch you can put them in an airtight container and put them in the freezer so then you can take them out one at a time when you feel like a yummy treat. It’s a toss-up if these are better or our Keto Peppermint Bark…Why choose though??

What Are Peppermint Patties?

There is only one definition for peppermint patties…they are a perfectly cool peppermint center encased in decadent dark chocolate.

When I think of peppermint patties I automatically think of York peppermint patties which is iconic among the decadent candy. They have been around since 1920 and when you hear peppermint patties you automatically think York.

What’s Inside a Peppermint Patty?

Just 4 ingredients make up this candy. Typically the inside of a peppermint patty is a cool mint center made of sweetened condensed milk, butter, peppermint extract, and powdered sugar which makes kind of a dough-like center.

Are Peppermint Patties Keto?

Sugar Free Keto Peppermint Patties

Normally peppermint patties are not keto. Because of the sweetened condensed milk and powdered sugar, both are high in calories and carbs.

I looked up a homemade version of regular peppermint patties, each one had 12 carbs and 76 calories with 11.5 grams of sugar. In York peppermint patties the calories for 1 piece is 140 calories and 31 carbs…WOW! That’s way too many carbs.

In contrast, these low carb peppermint patties that we made are so much less, only about 1 carb per patty. What a big difference and perfect for the Keto diet! No wonder you need to learn how to make these wonderful treats.

Are Peppermint Patties Good for You?

These low carb peppermint patties are good for you because they aren’t full of sugar like most peppermint patties or any other candy.

If you are going to eat chocolate, dark chocolate is definitely better for you than milk chocolate, because it has less sugar because the milk adds sugar to the chocolate, and the dark chocolate has more antioxidants which are good for us.

What Ingredients are in Sugar-Free Peppermint Patties?

Sugar Free Keto Peppermint Patties

Sugar-free Chocolate Chips – It’s such a great thing that there are chocolate chips that don’t have sugar in them.

Crisco Shortening – This gets blended in with the chocolate to help make the right consistency to coat the peppermint filling.

Swerve Powdered Sweetener – The best low carb sweetener to give your patties a smooth texture.

Coconut Oil – Make sure it’s refined so that your patties don’t taste like coconut.

Peppermint Extract -to give your patties that cool mint flavor.

Vanilla -The vanilla flavor combined with peppermint and chocolate are so yummy.

Heavy Cream – The cream helps smooth out the mixture, makes it a more creamy texture.

Can I Substitute Out the Coconut Oil?

One common question is if you can substitute something in for coconut oil when making peppermint patties. If you don’t want to use coconut oil you can swap it out and use Crisco shortening instead, the kind in the blue can. It doesn’t change anything with texture or taste.

If you use coconut oil use the refined one because it doesn’t taste like coconut. If you use the extra virgin one it has a strong taste of coconut. I personally love coconut flavor, but for this recipe, I like just the combo of the dark chocolate and peppermint.

I don’t want the taste of coconut combined in there. But it’s ok to use that one if you don’t mind coconut flavor mixed in with your peppermint flavor.

How to Make Keto Peppermint Patties

We will show you how easy it is to make these Keto peppermint patties. They are not complicated at all and you make them in 2 simple steps. The first one is the filling, and then you make the chocolate candy covering.

Making the Filling

To make the filling, first, you need to blend with an electric mixer the Swerve Sweetener and the coconut oil. If the coconut oil is hard you may need to stick it in the microwave for a few seconds to soften it.

Next, add your vanilla and peppermint extract and heavy cream. Mix with a spatula until really smooth and creamy like in the images below.

Forming the Patties

Once you make the filling, stick it into the freezer for about 10 minutes to firm it up slightly so that it’s easier to form.

Take it out of the freezer and use a small ice cream scooper to put a small scoop of the peppermint pattie filling on a tray or plate lined with a piece of parchment paper.

You can also use a spoon, but a scooper is easier in my opinion.

Next, flatten it out with a flat butter knife or a spoon as much as possible but it doesn’t need to be perfect.

Now freeze them again for another 15-20 min. The colder they are the easier it will be to coat them in chocolate.

Dipping Them in Chocolate

Once the peppermint pattie fillings are frozen and ready to dip, the first thing you have to do is get another tray or plate and line it with another piece of parchment paper.

Melting the Chocolate – To melt your chocolate just put your chocolate chips into a bowl combined with your Crisco and melt it in the microwave for about 30 seconds. Take it out and stir.

If it’s not completely melted then put it back in the microwave for another 15-30 seconds. Just make it soft enough to stir it, not to make it boil.

Use a fork to dip each frozen piece of filling into the chocolate completely and place it onto the parchment paper. Be sure to put the bumpy side down and the smoother side up, which will make your candies look nicer.

Let the excess chocolate drip off before putting them on the paper. This will help your chocolate to go further and make a more consistent and smooth look to your candies.

Store them covered in the freezer for about 10-15 minutes, until you see the chocolate is completely hardened.

Tips for Making the Best Sugar-Free Peppermint Patties

Sugar Free Keto Peppermint Patties
  • Make sure you use refined coconut oil which is virtually tasteless and not extra virgin coconut oil which is a heavy coconut flavor that will overpower your peppermint flavor.
  • If you find that your peppermint filling is too sweet then you can take out a little sweetener.   If it isn’t sweet enough then you could always add extra sweetener.
  • When you put your peppermint patties on a tray make sure to give enough space in between them so that the excess chocolate doesn’t all run into each other.

Use a Three-pronged Fork

One tip that I would like to share with you has to do with the step of using a 3 prong fork to dip your peppermint piece into the melted chocolate. The less surface space your fork covers, the easier it will be to get the candies off the fork and onto the tray.

Also, when you dip the peppermint into the chocolate, the further on the tip of the fork that you put the piece, the easier it will be to get it off the fork without messing up the chocolate.

If you need help guiding it off the fork you could use the tip of a toothpick on the underside of the pattie to gently guide it off and onto the paper so that you don’t mess up the smoothness of the chocolate.

Other Diets This Recipe is Good for

Gluten Free – There is no gluten in these low carb patties. Another sweet treat for our gluten-free readers.

Vegetarian – All THE ingredients are ok for vegetarians.

When to Serve Peppermint Patties

Sugar Free Keto Peppermint Patties

Peppermint patties may be more popular in the Winter, but I’m happy to say that you can serve peppermint patties any time that you would like to. They are great in December with a nice glass of sugar-free hot chocolate, but equally as tasty in the Summer as a cool treat from the freezer.

The best part is when we serve them to our guests, they usually have no idea that they are low carb….it’s fantastic. Everyone loves them! Make sure that you have a good supply in your freezer and that way you can take them out and enjoy them anytime!

How to Store Sugar-Free Peppermint Patties

You can store your leftover peppermint patties in a plastic container in the refrigerator or in the freezer. I have read that you can keep them for a month or two, but to tell you the truth ours never last anywhere near that length of time. They always disappear in only a few days or a week at most.

Do You Have to Refrigerate Them?

You can put your low carb peppermint patties in a container and leave it on the counter, and you don’t have to refrigerate them. However, in my opinion, they are better when they are cold, so we keep them in the refrigerator or sometimes keep them in the freezer.

Can You Freeze Peppermint Patties?

Sugar Free Keto Peppermint Patties

You can for sure freeze peppermint patties. I like to keep them in the refrigerator or the freezer. Right now as I am writing this we have a batch in the freezer. We take them out and give them to all of our friends. They all rave about how good they are, and best of all they never know that they are low carb.

How to Package Peppermint Patties

You may want to package up some peppermint patties to keep on hand at your house to offer to your friends and family that may come by to visit, and if it’s like our house, we always have people who stop by and visit.

Or you may want to package some up to give away as gifts because they are so delicious. We have some friends who have tried not only these peppermint patties but also other low carb candies and cookies that we have made and who request us to make them their own batch that they can have at home. It’s such a compliment because even if they don’t need to eat low carb for health reasons they love eating our treats.

One thing that’s important to store your peppermint patties is parchment paper. Whatever you choose to store your peppermint patties in like a tin or plastic container…etc line it with parchment paper to keep them from sticking to the bottom. Plus if you put a piece of parchment paper in between layers of patties so they don’t stick to each other.

Description

This is a recipe for homemade Keto Peppermint Patties that are really easy to make and taste so good. If you like peppermint you will love these.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 cup powdered Swerve sweetener
  • ¾ cup Coconut oil, refined
  • 1 Tbsp Peppermint Extract
  • 1 tsp. Vanilla
  • 2 Tbsp Heavy Cream
  • 5 ounces Lilly’s sugar-free Chocolate Chips
  • 2 tsp Crisco Shortening

Instructions

Notes

Less than 1 NET Carb per pattie

Use refined coconut oil. It is virtually tasteless. We made the mistake and used extra virgin coconut oil in a couple of recipes thinking we were using the best kind and regrettably they tasted very strongly like coconut.

When you dunk the peppermint pattie in the chocolate use a 3 prong fork. It will be easier that way to get it off without messing up the chocolate.

If you still need help getting it off the fork try using a toothpick on the underside of the peppermint pattie to help guide it off.

How are these 1 net carb per serving? 1 cup of swerve powdered sugar is 144g of carbs!

Leigh Oskwarek

Hi Kristen, Rest assured....Swerve is not 144 grams of carbs..... If you read the bag of Swerve it will tell you how it is calculated to be zero net carbs per serving. Net carbs = total carbs - fiber - the erythritol, or sugar alcohols....which makes zero net carbs. That's why this is a good sugar substitute to eat even when you are a diabetic because it does not affect blood sugar. It measures like sugar, tastes like sugar, is gluten-free, bakes like sugar, keto-friendly, is non-glycemic....etc So enjoy!!!
