Everything Bagel Seasoning Recipe – How to Make + Use It

This recipe for Everything Bagel Seasoning is so easy to make, very flavorful and at the same time so perfect to put on so many things. It goes so well with so many foods and we will give you some ideas of how you too can enjoy this delicious mixture and what to put it in!

Everything Bagel Seasoning

One of my favorite treats used to be going to a nice bagel place to get an everything bagel toasted with bacon. Everything bagels are such a great creation because when you are standing there and can’t decide which bagel to choose because they all sound good, everything bagel was the best solution. It gives you a little taste of a lot of things, that together are such a good combo.

When we used to go to our local bagel shop, they used to sell everything seasoning in little containers and we used to buy it and bring it home and use it on things and we thought that was such a good idea. Then in 2017, a store called Trader Joe’s started bottling it, selling it, and in 2019 it was voted as their number one favorite product by their customers. After that, it exploded on the internet and then other stores started selling it too.

Now because we make Everything bagel Seasoning at home we can enjoy that same good flavor combo on so many of the foods we eat all the time and we will show you how you can too.

What is Everything Bagel Seasoning?

Simply put, Everything Bagel Seasoning is the seasoning that is used on bagels…those yummy bagels that have everything on them. This is especially great when you like all of those flavors like garlic, and onion and poppy seeds….etc and you can’t decide which one to eat.

Thank goodness someone came up with the idea of putting all of these flavors together to make the best-tasting bagel ever!

We decided that it would be a great idea for us to make our own homemade version so we could enjoy it when we wanted to. The bagel shop was 30 minutes from home and Trader Joe’s was an hour away and we were always running out of it. It was a lot better to have the convenience of making sure that we had the seasoning at home whenever it was that we wanted to use it.

What Ingredients are in Everything Bagel Seasoning?

Poppy seeds – You can also get poppy seeds in your grocery store. The little black seeds are loaded with flavor.

Dried Onion Flakes – Or minced onion as some people call it.

Dried Garlic Flakes – Do not use garlic powder. If you do, it will fall through the cracks and settle at the bottom. You want it to blend better and stick with the other spices.

Flaked Sea Salt – This kind of salt is crucial to the mixture…don’t use finely ground salt, you need the texture in the mixture. If you can find Maldon sea salt, possibly at a nicer, specialty grocery store. The flakes are nice and light and not rock-like as some other kinds are.

Sesame Seeds – The regular white sesame seeds which you could use right out of the jar or you could toast them.

Black Sesame Seeds – You can usually buy these in the spice section of your store, but not all grocery stores carry them. You may have to get them online. If you can’t find them, you can still make everything bagel seasoning.

How to Make Homemade Everything Bagel Seasoning Without Poppy Seeds

If you hate poppy seeds or are allergic, you can make everything seasoning mix without them, even though it will taste slightly different without the poppy seeds.

If you are looking to replace the poppy seeds with something else, one of the ways you can make up the volume is by adding some chia seeds or another spice. You can experiment with some oregano or parsley or any other spices that you love to mix it up. I love poppy seeds so it’s hard for me to think about replacing them, but it’s up to you. It’s going to be your jar of seasoning.

Is It as Good as Trader Joe’s?

mixing up ingredients for Everything Seasoning

If you are like me, you love going to Trader Joe’s. They have a lot of specialty things that your regular grocery store doesn’t carry. Everything Bagel Seasoning is one of those specialties. They started selling it first and then other stores followed suit. But if you are like us, we live an hour away from Trader Joe’s so it’s not all that convenient to go there.

Since we have been doing so much cooking we decided that it was easier to make our own and store it in a jar, that way when we want to use it for something it’s as convenient as pulling out the salt shaker. Plus by making your own it is cheaper than buying the premade ones at stores.

In case you are wondering about how it tastes compared to Trader Joe’s, don’t even give it a second thought, it’s exactly the same delicious flavor, just for less money!

Best Tips for Everything Bagel Seasoning

two bowls of Everything Bagel Seasoning with teaspoon

I love it when people share with me helpful tips when I’m making something, especially for the first time. Here are a few tips to help give you some help while making everything seasoning.

  • Try to locate Malden Sea Salt because it’s light and crispy and not like biting into small rocks like some coarse/flaked salts. You may be able to find it online if you can’t find it in your store.
  • Try not to make any omissions in your ingredients if you can help it. But if you hate something then leave it out or if you can’t find something, then don’t hold off making your seasoning mix, just try to find it at your earliest convenience and add it later another time.
  • Try to find a nice-looking jar to store your Everything Bagel Seasoning in so that it will look nice on your counter and that way it will always stay close to your stove and food prep areas.
  • If you want to roast your Everything Bagel Seasoning then just add it to a nonstick frying pan and fry over medium heat, just a few minutes will do, until the onion, garlic and sesame seeds start to change color. Be careful not to burn them though.
  • Feel free to toast just your sesame seeds if you want that toasted flavor.
  • Melt some butter and flavor it with your seasoning and our it over so many things like popcorn, meat, veggies and so forth.
  • If you are going to add parmesan cheese or bacon bits to your Everything Bagel Seasoning Mix then you should store it in the refrigerator to keep the bacon or cheese fresh. The bacon will not last longer than a couple of weeks so don’t make more than you are going to use right away. The cheese will last longer, probably a couple of months but take a look at the date on the cheese before adding it to assure that you will get the longest use out of it.

Different Variations

Here are a few other ideas you can use to add some other flavors to your seasoning.

  • For some added crunch, feel free to add some sunflower seeds or pumpkin seeds to the original recipe for Everything Bagel Seasoning. It won’t taste like the original as much but it will be your own creation.
  • To change the flavor a bit then add your other favorite spices or herbs like thyme, rosemary, oregano or pepper.
  • For you cheese lovers who think that cheese makes everything better, like most of my family, you could add some parmesan cheese to your mixture and of course, add it to your Italian foods.
  • Maybe you like the taste of rye bread, so add some caraway seeds to your mix.
  • Another treat is to add some finely chopped bacon bits, after all, who doesn’t like bacon!
  • If you like things spicy you could add some crushed red pepper flakes to your mix.

My favorite way to store my Everything Bagel Seasoning Mix is to put it in a nice glass jar so that I can leave it on my counter, close to my stove so that I can use it frequently.

You could also store it in a glass jar and put it in your spice cabinet.

If you don’t have a jar you could always store your seasoning in a plastic container but just make sure that it is airtight to allow your seasoning to stay fresh longer.

When you buy spices in the store they come with expiration dates on them, so you can use this as a guide as to how long your seasoning mix will stay fresh for. • 2 Tbsp Poppy Seeds

  • 2 Tbsp  Dried Onion Flakes
  • 2 Tbsp Dried Garlic Flakes
  • 2 Tbsp Flaked Sea Salt

Notes

0.5 NET Carbs Per Serving

Even though you may have to make some adjustments in the mixture, one thing to remember is not to substitute Onion or garlic flakes for onion or garlic powder because the texture of them is entirely different and it will fall between the cracks and will not blend well. The same is true with the salt.

To roast/toast your Everything Bagel Seasoning, use a non-stick frypan over medium heat for a few minutes but do not burn.

You could add parmesan cheese to your seasoning mix but if you do just make sure that you refrigerate it to keep the cheese fresh.

Melt some butter and add some seasoning mix to it and pour it over your popcorn or your vegetables or even over your chicken or steak.

Try to locate Malden Sea Salt if you can because unlike some others which can be hard, like biting into small rocks, the Malden is light and crispy.

If you like spicy foods, you could also add some crushed red pepper to your mixture.
