Homemade Onion Soup Mix Recipe

If you thought you needed Lipton Onion Soup Mix to make a delicious onion dip or yummy meatloaf …etc, you were wrong….It is so easy to make your own Homemade Onion Soup Mix that you can use in so many recipes.

Easy Onion Soup Mix

I always used to use Lipton Onion Soup Mix for so many things from making dips to meatloaf and roasts to gravy….etc because it added so many food flavors to the meals.

But my biggest weakness is for some French Onion Dip! I just love that stuff. I felt like every time we would have company over I would pull out the packet of Lipton onion soup mix and combine it with 1 container of sour cream, pop it in the fridge to chill for a few minutes and then we would all start dipping away.

Now what’s awesome is that I don’t have to worry about not having any of the packets in my cabinet anymore because I can make my own. Oh, and the biggest perk of having a container of my own, is that it doesn’t have any hidden ingredients as store-bought soup packets have.

It’s a way healthier option but still has the same great taste that we have always loved.

What is Onion Soup Mix?

Onion Soup Mix is a blend of seasonings that are used in things like onion dip, soups, meatloaf, chicken and so much more. It’s a common item at the grocery store but now you can have it on hand in your own kitchen.

Is This a Lipton Soup Mix Copycat?

Dry Onion Soup Mix

You might be thinking that this is just like Lipton Onion Soup Mix…. Why would you make this if you could buy it in the store? Our recipe is very similar, but even better than Lipton’s onion soup mix because it’s without all of the fillers that store-bought prepared mix has in it.

Ours tastes just as good but has only 7 ingredients. Most of which are probably in your spice cabinet, to begin with.

One of the best things about our homemade onion soup mix is that it’s gluten-free. Lipton’s is not gluten-free, something to keep in mind for you celiac people out there.

What is Lipton Onion Soup Mix Made Of?

The box mix that you buy in the store has sugar and corn starch, wheat, artificial coloring, and corn syrup…and a bunch of other ingredients that I can’t even pronounce, all ingredients that you shouldn’t eat if you are trying to eat a much healthier lifestyle.

Instead, you can make this very easy mixture that does not have all of those unnecessary ingredients, plus it costs less money to make your own.

Does Lipton Soup Mix Contain MSG?

When you read a label looking for MSG you might be able to find it that easily, but it doesn’t mean that it’s not in there. There is a whole list of ingredients out there that have MSG in them but have different names on the labels. It’s kinda confusing so I added a link for you to check out that breaks down the different “fancy” names for MSG.

But yes, according to the label ingredients for the Lipton soup mix, it contains Disodium Guanylate and Disodium Inosinate which are 2 of the “fancy” names for MSG.

Does Dry Onion Soup Mix Contain Gluten?

Most of the store-bought soup mixed are not gluten-free. Be careful when buying bouillon packets because they all are not gluten-free either.

The good news is that my homemade onion soup mix is gluten-free. Oh and the beef bouillon that I use is Herbox Beef Bouillon, it’s gluten-free.

Is Dry Onion Soup Mix Healthy?

Homemade Dry Onion Soup Mix Recipe

Homemade dry onion soup mix contains only 6 ingredients all of which are just straightforward spices. One ingredient is beef bouillon powder. Just read the label to make sure it has the least about of things added to it and that its gluten-free.

So overall, yes I’d say this homemade french onion soup mix is a pretty healthy option.

Benefits of Making Homemade Onion Soup Mix Yourself

I’m sorry if I’m repeating myself but honestly guys I can’t say it enough. Making your own homemade french onion soup mix is great! The main reason is that you are in control of what ingredients you are using. And that is worth a lot!

And add in the fact that buying your spices in bulk and making your own big batch of onion soup mix will save you money in the long run. Buying premade soup mixes are expensive for only 2 packets at a time.

Different Variations on Dry Onion Soup Mix

Obviously, you can’t have onion soup mix without dried onion flakes and onion powder. And beef bouillon is going to a very important ingredient as well. But you can add a few other ingredients to my recipe as well.

Salt is something that can be added.

Another ingredient that some like to add is ground celery seed. If you chose to add some celery seed you only need a small amount, maybe only about ½ tsp.

Best Tips for Making Homemade Dry Onion Soup Mix

Even though this is one of the easiest recipes to make, I wanted to give you a few more tips when making homemade dry onion soup mix:

  • Stock up on all your ingredients when they go on sale.
  • Buying my spices in bulk from Costco is my absolute favorite. I save so much doing it this way.
  • To make this vegetarian or vegan, use vegetable bouillon instead of beef bouillon.
  • 3-4 tbsp is equivalent to an envelope of Lipton soup mix.
  • Double or triple the recipe for an even larger batch. I recommend it.

Is Onion Soup Mix Low Carb/Keto?

You can use onion soup mix when cooking if you are on a low carb or Keto diet, just make sure not to go overboard and use too much.

It has 3.4 NET Carbs per tablespoon to be exact. But don’t be too alarmed because when you add it to your recipes you are probably only going to add a few tablespoons. And then when you divide that up in your whole recipe you really aren’t adding in many extra net carbs.

Creamy French Onion Dip

As I told you at the beginning of this article, onion dip has always been a weakness of mine. But rather than making an onion dip containing a lot of extra unhealthy ingredients, now this homemade french onion dip is here for everyone to enjoy.

How to Store Dry Onion Soup Mix

Onion Soup Mix recipe

Once you make your dry onion soup mix transfer it to an airtight container or to a glass jar with a lid. Keep it stored in either your pantry, spice cabinet or on your kitchen counter. I’ve found some jars on Amazon that I love for my homemade spices.

How Long is Onion Soup Mix Good For?

Like most other spices homemade onion soup mix will last several months if not close to a year if stored in a nice dry place. But honestly, I don’t think that it will even make it months in your cabinet, I use it on everything!

Other Spices and Seasonings Recipes

I’ve really gotten into making my own homemade seasonings lately. I find that it’s so much cheaper in the long run than buying these tiny little containers of mixed spices. You’re making a larger quantity that will take you longer to use up.

Plus I like the fact that I know exactly what’s going in my seasoning, there are no hidden ingredients that you need to question.

Here are some good homemade seasonings I’ve been making:

  • Italian Seasoning
  • Homemade Pumpkin Pie Spice
  • Everything Bagel Seasoning
  • Taco Seasoning
  • Greek Seasoning
  • Ranch Seasoning
  • BBQ Seasoning

I’m relatively new to the KETO eating style & want to make & use this Low Carb Homemade Onion Soup Mix for a July 4th gathering & make a Low Carb Onion Dip but want to verify that for 3-4 TBS of soup mix I’d use 16 oz of Sour Cream. It’s Saturday, July 1 so I hope to get a response tomorrow Sunday, July 2, 2023.

Would you provide the brand name of the beef bouillon that you use? I have not found a keto version that does not include all types of additives. Online or in stores. Thank you

Jennifer, The one that I have found with the least amount of carbs is Herbox. It's dry powdered bullion.

Love to try this. Any ideas of what can be used to replace the beef bouillon powder? I know its available online, but I have everything except that, and locally not sure if I will be able to find it...

Also any ideas of how to make beef stew with this? I have an instant pot, but have yet to make stew, I have the stew meat, just wondering. Hope its okay to ask :) Not sure how to add this or how much to then make a beef stew?

@Leigh Oskwarek, Awesome thanks. :)

Yeah I mean once I find all the ingredients, would I just throw this mix, if so how much? And some stew meat beef broth etc into the instant pot and just cook a certain time?

Hi David, I don't know how to replace the bullion, but you should be able to buy it in any grocery store. It is where they have the canned soups. If you can't find it then for sure order some and hold off making it until it comes in. As far as the beef stew, if you want to make it before the boullion comes in, use beef broth and flavor it with some onion powder, garlic powder, and a little salt and pepper.
