Strawberry Salad with avocado and feta is a great Summertime meal or side dish. It’s easy to make and very colorful to serve for company or at a picnic. It’s a good way to eat your veggies and fruit, and very nutritious and also refreshing in the summertime.
Strawberry avocado salad is as delicious to eat as it is attractive to look at. I saw a similar recipe in a magazine so many years ago and always wanted to make something like it. I’m not sure exactly what was in that salad but I do remember that it was very colorful and would make a nice summertime treat.
So when we started our website I wanted to make a strawberry salad recipe in such a way that it would fit into our list of recipes. I’m happy to report that I think we did a good job making it not only beautiful and delicious to eat but another great healthy choice for a variety of diets.
What is Strawberry Salad?
Just like it sounds, strawberry salad is a colorful red salad mixed with some veggies and makes up a beautiful and delicious picture-perfect green summer salad with strawberries.
Strawberry salad is the best when you can use fresh strawberries when they are in season (May or June for most of the United States), making it a light and refreshing option for lunch or a side with dinner.
What Ingredients are in Strawberry Salad?
Arugula – This is another good leafy vegetable used in many salads and is a little tart which is a nice contrast with the sweet fruits.
Spinach – A green leafy vegetable that is used in many recipes which is also great in many salads, and is low in carbs and full of many nutrients.
Avocado – A good veggie used in many Mexican dishes but also great on salads and sandwiches…etc. It adds a creaminess to every bite of your strawberry avocado salad. Try to get one that’s not too hard and not too ripe, one that’s “just right” is the best.
Strawberries – This wonderful and versatile little fruit is very sweet but also low in carbs. You can, of course, buy them in the grocery store but the green salad with strawberries is exceptionally delicious when the strawberries are fresh-picked from a farm.
Raspberries – These small red berries are sweet and some great fiber to your strawberry avocado salad and are also pretty low in carbs.
Walnuts – These nuts are so good for so many things…especially in baking and in salads. In this strawberry summer salad, they are a nice contrast with the sweetness of the berries and the saltiness from the nuts.
Feta – A soft Greek cheese that has gotten so popular over the years with a lot of people on top of salads because it’s creamy and salty. You can use crumbled or chunks.
Different Variations of This Recipe
One thing you can do is substitute walnuts for almonds or pecans if you like those nuts better than walnuts. If you can’t eat nuts or don’t like them at all, then you can take them out altogether.
If you don’t like feta on strawberry salad you can substitute fresh mozzarella for it. Or if you can’t eat cheese or dairy at all then you can just omit the cheese altogether.
You can just use strawberries and leave out the raspberries. You can also try adding blackberries which sounds good for this salad.
Your options for the green base are endless. Try using romaine lettuce instead of arugula, use romaine lettuce instead of spinach, use only spinach, or any combo of your choice. We used half and half but you can of course do any proportions that you want to.
So as you can see this basic strawberry salad recipe can be changed around to suit your needs or taste buds and it will still be just as good.
Using Spinach
When we made this green salad with strawberries we used spinach and arugula together to show you that it’s ok to use a variety of greens. What I like about this strawberry salad is that you can mix any ingredients with the spinach and any ingredients with the strawberries and it would still taste good. In this strawberry salad recipe, we use about half arugula and half chopped spinach.
Spinach is a good leafy green to use together with strawberries. Spinach and strawberries are classic together which makes it an excellent choice to use in a strawberry summer salad. It’s the sweetness of the berries with the light green taste of spinach is what makes for a good combination.
Can I Substitute Strawberries with Another Fruit?
If you don’t like strawberries or if you are like my husband who is allergic to strawberries then no worries…there are other fruits that will do well in this” strawberry salad” and paired with the other ingredients.
If you are looking for low carb fruits, try blackberries, raspberries, and blueberries.
If carbs are not a big problem then you could try peaches, watermelon, or some sort of citrus fruit, for instance, mandarin oranges or clementines because they are smaller and more tender than full-size oranges. Pears and apples are also good fruits in salads, but also not low carb.
Cheese Options
Cheese is another ingredient that you can play around with on strawberry salad and it doesn’t necessarily have to be feta. You can also use goat cheese, gorgonzola or blue cheese. Another good choice is fresh mozzarella, they all work well so if you are a cheese lover you can try them all at different times.
If you are allergic to dairy then just leave out the cheese altogether and the salad is still very good without it.
Nut Options
While making a green salad with strawberries nuts are also something that you can make adjustments to depending on what type of nuts you like or what kind of nuts that may be in the cabinet in your house.
All nuts are good and there are no bad choices. Walnuts, pecans, cashews, pistachios, and almonds are all delicious. You can try one type or a mix of several types.
Nuts in this salad can be raw or roasted, salted or unsalted.
You can roast or toast the nuts yourself. We have a recipe on our site for spiced nuts that is delicious to top off different foods, especially in this strawberry salad recipe.
Other Add-Ins
We saved the best suggestion for last, everyone’s favorite…Bacon! The saltiness from the bacon is a good combo with the sweetness of the fruit! If you cook bacon in the oven it is super easy and comes out great.
Raw onions are a good topper, Vidalia onions or red onion are both good onions to use because they are both a little sweeter.
To me cucumbers can be added to every type of salad, they are crisp and refreshing and since they are full of water they go in every kind of salad as a compliment.
Best Dressing for Strawberry Feta Salad
When we made our strawberry feta salad we made our own dressing which I will share with you in the next section. It’s called lime cilantro salad dressing.
Another idea for dressing on your strawberry salad is balsamic vinaigrette. Just be careful because it is high in sugar if you are trying to watch that.

Best Tips
There are a lot of substitutions that you can make with strawberry salads so my suggestion would be to try a lot of them and that way you can see which combos that you like the best.
Here is a red onion trick…Soak the onions first in cold water. This will remove the strong aftertaste associated with eating raw onions, while at the same time preserving the onion flavor.
Use firm avocados so that they are not mushy in your salad.
Only put the avocado on the portion of salad that you will eat right away because the avocado will turn brown if it’s exposed to the air too long.
Mix and match different types of nuts on the strawberry salad, especially if you love nuts as I do.
You can use crumbled goat cheese if you like it better than feta.
What to Serve with Strawberry Salad
This recipe for a green salad with strawberries and feta can be eaten as a side dish or as a meal. One way to make it more filling is to add some meat or fish, like salmon, on top of it.
For instance, You could add some oven-baked chicken or chicken cooked on the grill. Steak on top of your salad is also a good choice. Then there is the option of grilled shrimp on top of the green salad with strawberries which is also super yummy!
Is Strawberry Salad Low Carb?
This recipe for strawberry avocado feta salad is definitely low carb and can be Keto too as long as you stay within the parameters of the diet with the right carb count. It comes out at 5.7 NET Carbs per serving.
Other Diets This Recipe is Good For
- Gluten-free – If you can’t eat things with gluten in them, you are fortunate with this yummy summer salad recipe.
- Vegan – If you use vegan feta then this can be a good choice since regular feta is not an acceptable vegan food. Or you can just leave out the cheese altogether.
- Vegetarian – Strawberry salad is absolutely a vegetarian recipe with no meat included in it.
- Nut-free – You may not like nuts or you may be allergic to them, so if you omit the nuts it can be nut-free.
- Dairy-free – If you can’t eat dairy or don’t like dairy then you can remove the feta altogether and any other kind of cheese, then your strawberry salad will be dairy-free.
Making Ahead Tips
When making your strawberry avocado salad ahead of time, just like a lot of other salads, don’t put any dressing on it until just before you are ready to eat it.
If you have time and want to get a head start on putting your strawberry salad together, you can, however, start chopping and preparing the ingredients.
Once you do that, put them in separate bowls or containers in the refrigerator so that when you are ready to eat the salad you can just dump all of the prepared ingredients into the large bowl. It will only take a couple of minutes to mix up the strawberry salad at that point.
Keep all of the ingredients chilled so that when you make your strawberry salad it will be cold. Then when you pour the cold dressing on it the whole salad will stay fresh longer than if it was room temperature when you use the dressing on it.
How to Store
If you have a leftover portion of undressed strawberry salad you can store it in the refrigerator for up to 4 days. Just wrap it in an air-tight container so that it will stay fresher for longer.
If you have leftover salad dressing it will stay fresh for at least a week in the refrigerator also in an airtight container or a glass jar. Shake before serving to mix up the spices and flavors.
Do not put the dressing on more salad than you are going to eat on the same day, otherwise, it will get soggy.

This recipe for strawberry salad can be changed around and not really affect the flavor. There are a lot of changes in nuts, fruit, greens, and cheese that are all good, depending on what you like or don’t like.
Do not dress the salad until you are ready to eat it or else the dressing can make the ingredients soggy in your strawberry summer salad.
A red onion trick is to soak the onions first in cold water. This will remove the strong aftertaste associated with eating raw onions, while at the same time preserving the onion flavor.
