Ok onto the recipe…
What is Keto Coffee?
So what exactly is keto coffee, or as some call it bulletproof coffee or butter coffee? It is coffee that is made with butter or ghee, and either MCT oil or coconut oil. It’s been a big trend among the keto community over the last several years, along with chaffles.
Keto coffee has the calories to match an average breakfast but is a great healthy alternative. It’s used commonly in intermittent fasting. Keto butter coffee gives you energy, mental focus, and a satisfying feeling for hours.
Something to keep in mind though is that if you are intermittent fasting, keto coffee will break your fasting from the night time, but it will boost up your metabolism with fats and caffeine.
Why Put Butter and Oil in Your Coffee?
I know it sounds kind of odd…butter in your coffee right? I thought it was odd when I first heard about it, but not only is it super popular it has a lot of benefits to it.
When making butter coffee, adding MCT oil helps with focus, energy, and suppresses your appetite. Read below for more information.
Can I Just Drink Regular Coffee on Keto?
If you don’t like the way bulletproof coffee tastes it’s ok, you still can enjoy drinking a regular cup of coffee while still remaining on keto.
Some of you may just be a black coffee drinker (like my dad), while others may like theirs on the sweeter and lighter side.
If that’s the case then go ahead and try our recipe for keto coffee creamer. We have about 9 different flavor combinations so whatever your favorite flavor is, you will love it.
Keto Coffee vs. Bulletproof Coffee
Most people use keto coffee and bulletproof coffee interchangeably. However, the term “Bulletproof Coffee” is trademarked by the Bulletproof company, so I just need to make you all aware that our “bulletproof coffee recipe” is not affiliated with them or endorsed by them.
However, I do use Bulletproof MCT Oil in my keto coffee recipe. It’s a great high-quality product and I recommend using it.
When keto coffee started it was super simple…a spoonful of coconut oil that was just stirred right into your hot coffee.
But the founder of Bulletproof.com deserves the credit for combining coffee with grass-fed butter and MCT oil, then blending them together leaving you with a creamy “latte-like” breakfast.
Benefits of Drinking Keto Coffee
Drinking our bulletproof coffee recipe has some great benefits:
- Focus – Keto coffee will help keep you focused. MCT’s stand for medium-chain triglycerides, and it is a very clean form of energy that is metabolized by your liver.
- Energy – Butter and MCT oil helps to give you added energy throughout the day.
- Appetite Suppressant – Helps to curb your appetite and keep you full longer.
- Creamy Texture – The grass-fed butter really gives you a super creamy texture, especially when blended in a high-powered blender or immersion blender.
Is Keto Coffee Good for Weight Loss?
Only drinking keto coffee or butter coffee will not help you to lose weight. The main benefits of drinking butter coffee are long-lasting energy, mental clarity, and keeping you full for longer.
Rather than having breakfast, you can drink this keto coffee recipe and it may help you to lose a little weight but it’s not going to be a miracle on its own.
Keto Bulletproof Coffee Ingredients
- Brewed Coffee – Use either an 8oz, 10oz, or 12oz cup of freshly brewed coffee.
- Grass-Fed Butter – Has to be grass-fed butter. It contains much higher Omega-3 fatty acids and higher in vitamins.
- MCT Oil – Be sure to get a good quality MCT oil. I recommend using the brand Bulletproof.
- Heavy Cream – This is an optional ingredient. I prefer adding it but it’s not in the classic keto coffee recipe.
- Vanilla – Also an optional add-on. Gives a little added flavor.
Coffee Beans vs Pre-Ground Coffee
Coffee lovers, or as some call us “coffee snobs” are always going to tell you that whole coffee beans are best, and here’s why:
- Whole bean coffee isn’t stale when you buy it. Most bags of pre-ground coffee you buy at the grocery store are already stale. Pre-ground coffee loses most of its natural flavor in just 20-30 minutes.
- Grind whole coffee beans for any type of brewer. Even though pre-ground coffee is convenient, it doesn’t work for all types of brewers. When grinding your own beans, you can choose the size of your grounds which is different for a french press, regular drip coffee pot, pour-over, etc.
- Whole beans give you power over the coffee’s flavor. When using pre-ground coffee you get what you get with flavor. Using whole beans gives you the opportunity to change the flavor. If it’s too bitter…don’t worry that’s fixable with whole beans.
Best Coffee Beans
When buying coffee beans, the type of beans DO matter. There are 2 most common types of coffee beans are Arabica beans and Robusta beans. What’s the difference??
Arabica Beans – These are the beans you want! They originate from the Ethiopian highlands and make up about 60% of the world’s coffee production.
The beans are also grown in subtropical climates in other countries outside of Ethiopia including Guatemala, Columbia, Brazil, Ecuador, Costa Rica, India, and Rwanda. They are harder to grow, needing very specific growing conditions making them a pricier coffee bean.
Robusta Beans – Robusta coffee beans are hearty and can survive in different climates, and aren’t as temperamental to grow. However, they have double the caffeine of Arabica beans making them more bitter and ultimately they don’t taste as good as Arabica beans.
Salted or Unsalted Butter?
Salted or unsalted? To be or not to be…that is the question. Hahaha sorry, if you guys didn’t get my Billy Madison reference. Ok moving on now…
Both unsalted and salted butter are fine to use in Keto coffee and it depends on your tastes.
A lot of people do not like to use salted butter in their bullet coffee recipe because they said they can taste the salt. That being said, salted butter is my favorite. I NEVER buy unsalted butter for anything that includes when making our keto coffee recipe.
Something to keep in mind is that I have heard from many people that it can be a challenge to find Unsalted Grass-Fed Butter. If that’s the case and the salt doesn’t bother you, then go ahead and use salted grass-fed butter.
My favorite brand is Kerrygold Pure Irish Butter. It’s grass-fed and so rich and creamy. Honestly, once you have tried it, you won’t be going back to any regular store-bought brand.
TIP – Buy the Kerrygold grass-fed butter at Costco when it goes on sale.
MCT Oil and Keto Coffee
I’m not going to lie to you, there are a lot of technical terms that are hard to understand about MCT Oil. I’m going to explain it in a way that’s easy to understand.
Medium-chain triglycerides (MCT’S) are fats found in coconut oil and other foods. MCT’s are metabolized differently than long-chain triglycerides, which are found in most other foods.
MCT Oil is a highly concentrated source of medium-chain triglycerides. It provides sustained energy, supports a healthy digestive system, and suppresses hunger. It’s super easy to add into liquids such as coffee because it has no smell or taste.
Best MCT Oil for Keto Coffee
I mentioned earlier in this article about the brand Bulletproof. They make high-quality MCT oils. The two I recommend are:
- Bulletproof Brain Octane C8 MCT Oil – Sourced only from coconuts. Contains C8 that quickly converts into fat-burning energy.
- MCT Oil (Formerly XCT Oil) – Sourced only from coconuts, not palm oil. Contains C8 and C10, which are two of the most ketogenic MCT’s found in coconut oil.
Substitutes for MCT Oil
If you don’t have MCT oil then you can replace it with coconut oil. The fat in coconut oil is comprised of MCTs, and probably most of us have coconut oil in our pantries. Please just make sure you use high-quality organic coconut oil.
What Can I Put in My Coffee on Keto?
Not only can you add different keto-approved kinds of milk and sweeteners, but you also can add a few other things to your butter coffee.
- Extracts – Vanilla, Peppermint, Almond
- Unsweetened Cocoa Powder – Make it a Mocha Butter Coffee
- Collagen – Vital Proteins is my favorite brand
Milk Options
- Heavy Cream
- Unsweetened Almond Milk
- Unsweetened Coconut Milk
Can I Have Coffee with Milk on Keto?
Milk isn’t the best option to put in your coffee while on keto. It’s too high in carbs.
Sweetener Options
If you need a little sweetness in your keto bulletproof coffee that’s ok. Here’s what you should use:
- Stevia
- Monk Fruit
- Swerve
- Allulose
Things to Avoid Putting in Keto Coffee
There are some things that you don’t want to put in your keto coffee. Here are some of the top things to avoid when making butter coffee.
- Sugar or Artificial Sweeteners – Stay away from cane sugar or any artificial sweetener. Instead of sugar use stevia, monk fruit, or other keto-approved sweeteners.
- Margarine or Regular Butter – USE GRASS-FED BUTTER ONLY.
- Soy Milk – Soy eaten in excess can mess with your hormone levels and is high in antinutrients that are found in grains.
- Sweetened Nut Milk or Regular Milk – Do NOT use any nut milk that is sweetened. Always read the label and make sure that it doesn’t have any added sugars or fillers.
- Cooking Oils – Don’t use any cooking oils such as canola or olive oil. Stick with MCT oil or coconut oil.
Tools to Use
- Coffee Pot – Can’t have bulletproof coffee without making a regular cup of coffee first.
- Milk Frother – For making your butter coffee on a quick on-the-go morning.
- Blender or Immersion Blender – This is the best way to make bulletproof coffee super frothy….this is my favorite way.
How to Make the Best Keto Coffee (Bulletproof Coffee)
STEP 1: Brew an 8 oz, 10 oz, or 12 oz cup of coffee.

STEP 4: Using a frother, immersion blender, or regular blender, whip up the coffee until it foams.
STEP 5: Pour into your favorite coffee mug.

- Gluten-Free: 100% gluten-free!
- Nut-Free: Our keto coffee doesn’t have any nut milk such as almond milk, making it completely nut-free.
- Vegan or Dairy-Free: This bulletproof coffee recipe is NOT dairy-free, but if you need it to be we can fix that. Replace the butter with cocoa butter and replace the heavy cream with full-fat coconut milk.
What to Serve Alongside Keto Coffee?
The beauty of drinking your keto coffee in the morning is that it should be drunk alone because it will fill you up and suppress your appetite.
However, if you chose to make yourself a regular cup of coffee using our homemade keto coffee creamer then here are a few different breakfast ideas that will go nicely:
- Keto Blueberry Muffins
- Keto Banana Muffins
- Hard-Boiled Eggs
- Keto Cinnamon Rolls
- Almond Flour Waffles
- Low Carb Pancakes
Can I Make Keto Coffee Ahead?
Our bullet coffee recipe is best enjoyed fresh and not leftover, so I recommend making it right before you are ready to drink it.
How to Store
I don’t recommend storing any leftover bullet coffee because it doesn’t take that great the next day. I’d say you should just make a new cup the next morning.
However, if you do want to try storing it, cover it and place it in the fridge.
How to Reheat Keto Coffee
If your keto coffee gets cold and it needs to be reheated, all you need to do is microwave it for 30-60 seconds, depending on how hot you like it.
